Who is Shurine pate?

Shurine grew up in Nevada and completed nursing school in Las Vegas after working many years in ophthalmology. She started her critical care nursing career in Amarillo, Texas working in a trauma and surgical intensive care unit. During that time, she also had the opportunity to gain some experience in primary care and at an ambulatory surgical center. In 2013, she and her husband, Dusty, moved to Prescott Valley, Arizona. She started working at Dignity Health Yavapai Regional Medical Center (DHYRMC) in the cardiovascular and medical intensive care ICU and the nursing float pool at the Veterans Administration Medical Center. During her work with DHYRMC, she was a member of the performance improvement committee, chairman and co-chairman of the critical care unit-based council, charge nurse of the critical care, and mentor for many new graduate and critical care nurses. She also served on the ethics board of DHYRMC.

Shurine graduated with her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from Arizona State University. Her doctorate project focused on training healthcare providers on advance care planning and the Physician Order for Life-Sustaining Treatment. During her graduate training, in addition to primary care, she did rotations in palliative care and hospital administration. She also did a transitional science internship at Arizona State University. She is an active member of the Arizona Hospital and Healthcare Association (AzHHA) Physician Order for Life-Sustaining Treatment (POLST) task force and the Arizona Falls Prevention Coalition (AFPC).

I have worked with Shurine Pate in the ICU. I trust her with my life. You will not find a better healthcare provider. She is honest, trustworthy, and brilliant."

Primary care nurse practitioners

You have a choice

I specialize in primary care, or internal medicine, of adults and geriatric patients. My training is specific to these patients in this setting. In Arizona, nurse practitioners are independent practitioners for the population they completed training on. Nurse practitioners and physicians have differences, but those differences often complement each other. There is a reason that nursing was the most trusted profession for many years and treating the whole person is one of them. There are good physicians and nurse practitioners and there are bad ones of both. Whether you see a nurse practitioner or a physician in primary care, they should know how to take care of you and your healthcare needs and when to refer you to a specialist when needed.
